This month is one where many people will be getting together to enjoy some time off. Unfortunately, this can also mean that there are increased risks of accidents within the home. What are some things you can do to ensure you stay safe?

Here are a few reminders

Fire is a big issue in the home. Make sure to never leave candles unattended, and keep them well out of the way of any flammable materials. Its also very important to check string lights and make sure there are no frayed wires or broken bulbs etc. Do not allow children or pets around these items.

This is a good time to test your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. Make sure they are in good working order and that should the need arise, you have a fire escape plan. There are many extra factors that could lead to fires, leaving the stove unattended is a big factor, also if there will be smokers in the house, make sure that there are no smoldering cigarette butts placed in the trash.

Care should be taken when it comes to your fireplaces. Its important to check that the flue is open. Also make sure there is nothing surrounding the fireplace that could catch fire easily. It is not wise to throw wrappers in the fire.

It is important to keep an extra eye on children. Make sure to keep sharp objects such as scissors etc out of reach of small children. Did you know that poinsettias are actually poisonous? Don’t let children or even pets be within reach of them.

While these seem like obvious reminders, it is still good to keep them in mind never the less.
